Leadership
and management skills are essential in any career path an individual can choose
to take and especially in healthcare today. In most careers management and
leadership is needed in order to provide resources and ensure the organization
is running smoothly (Thornton, 2015). In the current ever-changing health care
system, there is very high demand but limited resources (Thornton, 2015). In
order to keep the health care facility running smoothly it is essential to have
a transformational leader who can motivate and provide a clear vision of the
future (Kibort, 2004). In health care facilities, it is also crucial that there
is a manager to provide resources, and discipline (Thornton, 2015. These skills
are extremely important to possess when trying to advance in any company or
career. As a future occupational therapist, I will be working with assistants
in order to help me execute tasks and provide patient care. As the head of the
department, it is imperative that I possess leadership and management skills. Kibort,
describes a leader as being an energizer, possessing the ability to produce
energy within an organization that will enable the maximum release of energy
from the workers (2004). Some of the skills a leader must possess include,
strong communication, motivation, emotional intelligence, creativity and
flexibility (Cutler, 2014). According to Kibort, we often focus all our
attention on leadership but we do not focus on management because the work is
more behind the scenes (2004). Management skills, which are equally important, include
delegating skills, conflict resolution, planning, making decisions and problem
solving (Cutler, 2014). Another important skill in the workplace is
interpersonal skills, this is essentially the most important skill to have when
working with other people (Cutler, 2014). Some interpersonal skills include
Listening skills, effective body language, managing differences and managing
agreements (Hudak, Russell, Fung, & Rosenkrans, 2015). Taking the
leadership and management skills assessments has made me reflect greatly on my strengths
and my weaknesses. I have now identified the areas that I need to focus on to
be a good leader and manager. Some of my identified strengths were emotional
intelligence, compelling vision of the future, being a good role model, managing
differences, providing support and personal integrity. Some identified areas of
weakness were managing performance effectively, providing support and
stimulation to the workers, motivation to lead, understanding team dynamics, delegating
and managing discipline. Fortunately, all these skills can be developed through
education, training and experience. In order for me to become an excellent
occupational therapist with great leadership and management skills I have to
put in place a plan in order to address areas that need improvement.

One
of my identified areas of development was managing performances. In order to
manage performances effectively I have to make sure that I develop expectations
within the work place and ensure that everyone is aware of these expectations
and why they are put in place (Leibler & McConnel, 2017). It is also
important that I involve the workers in the decision process of what rules are
going to be put in place for them to follow (Cutler, 2014). These changes will
result in high performances from my workers and trust within the organization. The
second identified area of improvement was providing support and stimulation to
the workers. I can improve this area by not just providing the workers with the
same tasks to do every day but also providing them with new tasks that are  a bit more challenging than their used to
(Gregory, 2016). I need to identify the strengths of the workers and identify
tasks that will help them grow and develop while also providing constant
feedback (Gregory, 2016). It is also imperative that I remove any obstacles that
will get in the way of the workers completing their tasks. Using the blake
mouton grid I will figure out the right balance between task concern and people
concern within my facility (Robernson, 2005).

Another
area of improvement that was brought to my attention was my motivation to lead,
I feel this is a specific area of concern for me because though I know I have
the leadership skills, sometimes I could lack confidence. I often fear that I
might not be doing the right things or maybe someone else would be a better
leader than me. I feel I can work on this motivation by clearly identifying my
skills and being confident in those skills. I also need to improve my understanding
of team dynamics and encouraging good relationships. When working in groups I often
try not to involve myself in other peoples conflicts. As a manager, I need to
be able to resolve these conflicts and be a mediator in these issues (Cutner,
2014). It is also important that I become actively involved in the work process
in order to reach team goals (Hudak et al., 2015). I will also work on creating
diversity within teams instead of grouping similar people alike in order to
increase creativity and knowledge.

Another
area I need to focus on is delegation, a manager must know how to delegate
tasks effectively. According to mind tools (n.d) task delegation should be
based on who can perform the task best rather than who has the most time on
their hands. This is an idea that is new to me because in the past I focused on
who can complete the task at the time and worried about not stressing out
already busy workers. I now realize it is about balance and it is important to
select the right people to complete the task in order to have the task done
right (leibler & McConnell, 2017). It is also important for me to complete
as much tasks as possible in order to make sure the job is done correctly and
ensure that I set an example.

Another
area for improvement is managing discipline and dealing with team conflict;
sometimes I see people doing the wrong things and try to give them time to
learn on their own before addressing the issue with them. However, this does
not align with the path-goal approach were a leader sets high goals for their
employees (leibler & McConnel, 2017). Not addressing poor peformance can
lead to poor customer service and can effect team performance (mind tools, n.d).
It is important for me to address the issue as soon as possible in order to
keep discipline in the workplace and improve that individual’s performance (Cutler,2014).  Team conflict can also arise due to
differences and poor performances from people within the group. It is imperative
that as a leader I have open communication with the workers and employ a
conflict resolution technique (Cutler, 2014). This conflict however can also be
positive because it can bring up underlying issues within the workplace that
need to be addressed (mindtools, n.d). The last area that I need to work on is
managing agreement, it is important that I help the team come into agreement
with one another (Hudak et al., 2015). I can do this by employing team meetings
that encourage people with different views or who are in different teams to
come together and work towards a common goal (Hudak et al., 2015).

In
conclusion, Leadership and management skills are great skills to develop is any
career and are extremely important to me as a future occupational therapist. I plan
to lead my people using different leadership and management strategies in order
to have the best outcomes. I plan to motivate, encourage and discipline my
workers in an effective way. I will know when to employ different leadership
strategies in different situations (Leibler & McConnell, 2017). I plan on
predominantly employing the path goal approach and transformational leadership
style because it is best suited for organizations with high uncertainty such as
health care facilities (Leibler & McConnell, 2017). The leadership and
management skills assessment has helped me identify areas that I am strongest
in and has also helped me identify areas that need improvement. Moving forward
I plan on focusing on my weaknesses and gaining more confidence in my
leadership skills.
