Haruko
Obokata, was a former stem cell biologist and research unit leader of Japan’s
lab of Cellular Programming, Riken Center for Developmental Biology. She first
claimed to have made an easy way to make STAP
cells (stimulus triggered acquisition of pluripotency). STAP was a method
to make pluripotent stem cells by subjecting ordinary cells to intense stress,
such as application of a toxin, submerging in a weak acid or even physical
trauma.

                                                                
She published this paper in Nature in Jan,2014 and it gained immediate
prominence and global recognition. The title of the paper was “Bidirectional
development potential in reprogrammed cells with acquired pluripotency”. She published
that she recently discovered an unexpected method of somatic cell reprogramming
into pluripotent cells by exposure to sub lethal stimuli and also states that
this method does not require nucleus transfer or genetic manipulation. The
reprogrammed STAP cells are not like the embryonic stem cells, they can
contribute the cells to embryonic and the placental tissues.

                                                                 
The mouse STAP cells don’t have the ability to contribute to the
placenta as well as trophoblast marker expression on converting to embryonic
stem cells by treating it with adenocorticotrophic hormone(secreted by the
anterior pituitary gland and is produce in response to biological stress) and
leukemia inhibitory factor(cytokine that affects cell growth by inhibiting cell
differentiation).She stated that she has developed a method which is novel and
unlike the trophoblast stem cells(precursors of differentiated cells of the
placenta)these STAP cells has Fibroblast growth factor 4( Fgf4 protein)which
plays a vital role in mitogenic characteristics of the cell and also in cell
survival. These FgF4 induced stem cells from STAP cells contribute to both the
placental and the embryonic tissues and transform or differentiate into
Embryonic stem cells( Pluripotent stem cells from inner mass of blastocyst of a
embryo) like cells when cultured in a Leukemia Inhibitory Factor (LIF)medium.

These STAP cells have a unique pluripotency potential which are shown by in
vitro conversion and chimaera formation
