Genetic engineering, which is sometimes also called genetic modification, is the process of manipulating the DNA inside an organism. There are many benefits of using genetic engineering (GE). Some of them include that humans have a potential to live longer and quickly adapt to changing environments. Although humans are already living longer and longer as technology advances, genetic engineering might have even extended it further. First, genetic engineering can eliminate the disease that might kill us earlier than necessary, such as severe fever. Next, GE can reverse some of the most fundamental reasons of the human body’s natural decline, like the decline of the heart of pumping less blood as people age. Reversing the decline will improve both lifespan and quality of our life later on. (Uppangala, 2010)
GE can also help human adapt to different environments and growing problems of the environment. If the Earth experience a big change in climate, such as global warming, our human body might take hundreds or thousands of years to adapt. With the help of GE, our body can adapt to the new environment not just quicker but also better.(Rinkesh, 2017)
Another advantage of genetic engineering is that it can defeat disease and get rid of illness in unborn children. Some of the most deadly disease, like malaria, that have bothered human, can be instantly wiped out with genetic engineering. There are also mutations that occur in human like the sickle cell disease. Those mutations will bother human forever unless we actively fight against those mutations with genetic engineering. We can already detect if unborn children will suffer from diseases. People often consider aborting the baby if they discovered that their baby has some issues with diseases like the down syndrome. With the help of genetic engineering, we can cure these disease and illness while the baby is in the womb so that all babies will be born healthy and without diseases. If you have diseases that might pass down to your children such as the Huntington disease, GE can help ensure that your child to not just only live long and healthy but also not to be a carrier of the disease.(Rinkesh, 2017)
Though there are many advantages of using genetic engineering, there are also plenty of disadvantages. One of the disadvantages is that GE might cause genetic defects. Scientists have not yet known absolutely everything about the human body. We cannot estimate the effects of GE on us even on the slightest changes. We might wipe out one disease by GE just to reveal something even more dangerous. Also, if scientist tries genetically engineer babies that are still inside the womb, there is a real danger to the baby and it might cause unthinkable problems such as miscarriage, and premature birth, both of which is not only very dangerous but might also cause the population to drop drastically when used on a large scale. The success rate for GE now has still left to be desired. Scientists need to able to estimate the effect of all of the actions they will have, and they just cannot handle the everything that might go wrong.(Rinkesh, 2017)
Another disadvantage of genetic engineering is the lack of diversity. With GE, it would produce an effect just like what cloning would do, as it replaces all the defective but unique genes with the functional but identical ones.(2016, retrieved from futureofworking.com) Genetic diversity would be a thing of the past. The entire population would respond to the disease the same way as they have the same genes. If there were to be even a single virus that even we couldn’t cure, the human population might extinct due to lack of diversity.(Uppangala, 2010)
My opinion on genetic engineering is that although genetic engineering might be a big step into the future of curing disease, I still believe that it isn’t time for genetic engineering to shine and there might still be time and room for improvements for GE to become safer, more efficient, and more effective. So no, I am currently against genetic engineering. But as technology advances, I might change my opinion.
